Supported Housing Week 2026: Marina’s story
What is supported housing?
Supported housing offers a safe, stable place to live for people facing a range of challenges. This might include older people, people with disabilities or learning difficulties, survivors of domestic abuse, and those who’ve experienced homelessness.
Across our supported housing services, residents get personalised support and 24-hour care where needed, helping them to live happily and independently.
Living well with dementia: Marina’s story
Marina* lived independently for many years before being diagnosed with mixed dementia, including Alzheimer's disease and vascular dementia. As her condition got worse, she started to have memory problems and falls, making everyday life more and more challenging.
Marina moved into one of our services where she could access tailored support while staying as independent as possible.
The change was understandably daunting. Marina said, "I was anxious because I had never lived with other people before." However, Marina quickly settled into her new home, building strong relationships with her neighbours and staff.
Everyone supporting Marina has received dementia training. Everyone there understands the importance of providing personalised support that reflects Marina’s individual needs and experiences.
Like many people living with dementia, Marina has both good and difficult days. Sometimes she becomes forgetful or loses track of conversations, but with the right support in place, she continues to live a meaningful and fulfilling life.
One of the highlights of Marina’s week is attending a specialist day centre for people living with dementia. "I feel good and I really like this place. I like it when I go [there]," she said.
Supported housing has provided Marina with a safe, stable environment where she can continue to live with dignity, maintain social connections, and access the support she needs to manage her dementia with confidence.
